The first group of the training observances — twenty-six rules on how a monk wears the robe, walks and sits among houses.
- When chanted
- Recited by monastics after the morning service, following the book's own instruction, as a periodic review of the training rules.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
เสขิยวัตร are the training observances, the last and largest section of the monastic rule and also the mildest. Falling short of one is not an offence calling for any formal remedy. They govern deportment — how a monk appears to the households he walks among every morning.
The book divides them into four groups and this is the first, สารุปปะ, on what is fitting, with twenty-six rules. Its heading and count are the book's own, printed at the head of the group.
It is printed in Pali only, so the English here is a working translation made for this edition. Several of the terms in this group are technical and carry established renderings in translations of the monastic code, which would repay comparison before anyone leans on the English.
Meaning and purpose
Every rule is built the same way: a statement in the first person about what one will do, closing with สิกขา กะระณียา, this is a training to be observed. It is not a prohibition issued to somebody. It is a sentence the monk says about himself, and the grammar turns each rule into a resolution rather than an order.
What they cover is strikingly ordinary. The lower robe and the upper robe worn evenly all round; going among the houses well covered; not walking on the heels or on tiptoe; not sitting lolling or clasping the knees. None of it is morality. All of it is about being unremarkable in someone else's street.
That is why they are worth reciting. A community that eats by alms lives on the goodwill of the villages it walks through, and a monk who is careless in a doorway is not committing a wrong so much as spending something that is not only his. Saying the list aloud keeps a long catalogue of small things where it can actually act — in the memory, before the moment arrives.
