Four reflections on the four requisites — robe, almsfood, lodging and medicine — each stating the proper reason for using it.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the morning service, and used again by monastics at the moment a requisite is actually taken up.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
Unlike the chants around it, this one carries a reference printed in the book itself — นัย ม. มู ๑๒/๑๓-๘ — so its source is the book's own, and nothing has been attributed on top of it.
ตังขะณิกะ means at that moment, and the title is doing real work. This is not a reflection on requisites in general but one made at the instant of use: while putting on the robe, before eating, on entering the lodging, when taking medicine. Chanting it in the morning rehearses a form meant to be used again during the day.
The four section labels are editorial, added for this edition. The book separates the reflections by a blank line only and prints no headings between them.
Meaning and purpose
Each of the four opens the same way — ปะฏิสังขา โยนิโส, reflecting wisely — then names its requisite and gives its purposes. The construction that follows is the important one: ยาวะเทวะ, only so far as, for just this much and no more. The robe is for warding off cold and heat and the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun and creeping things, and for covering the body. A limit is set before a use is granted.
The purposes given are deliberately modest and physical. Nothing is said about the quality of the robe, the taste of the food or the comfort of the lodging; the reflections name only what the requisite is needed for. The effect is to leave the thing in use while removing the reasons for wanting a better one, without requiring the practitioner to go without.
This is why it survives as a daily chant rather than a rule. A rule can be kept while the wanting continues underneath it; a reflection made at the moment of use puts the question in the middle of the act itself, where it can actually be answered. Recited by an assembly each morning, it keeps the form ready for the occasions during the day when it is meant to be used.

Handa mayaṃ taṅkhaṇika-paccavekkhaṇa-pāṭhaṃ bhaṇāma se.
Now let us recite the reflection made at the moment of use.
The Robe
Paṭisaṅkhā yoniso cīvaraṃ paṭisevāmi,
Reflecting wisely, I use the robe:
Yāvadeva sītassa paṭighātāya,
only to ward off cold,
Uṇhassa paṭighātāya,
to ward off heat,
Ḍaṃsa-makasa-vātātapa-siriṃsapa-samphassānaṃ paṭighātāya,
to ward off the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun and creeping things,
Yāvadeva hirikopina-paṭicchādanatthaṃ
and only for the sake of modesty.
The Almsfood
Paṭisaṅkhā yoniso piṇḍapātaṃ paṭisevāmi,
Reflecting wisely, I use the almsfood:
Neva davāya na madāya na maṇḍanāya na vibhūsanāya,
not for fun, not for indulgence, not for beautifying, not for adornment,
Yāvadeva imassa kāyassa ṭhitiyā yāpanāya vihiṃsuparatiyā brahmacariyānuggahāya,
but only for the maintenance and nourishment of this body, to keep it from harm, and to support the holy life,
Iti purāṇañca vedanaṃ paṭihaṅkhāmi navañca vedanaṃ na uppādessāmi,
thinking: thus I shall put an end to old feeling and not give rise to new,
Yātrā ca me bhavissati anavajjatā ca phāsuvihāro cāti.
and I shall have sustenance, blamelessness and a comfortable abiding.
The Lodging
Paṭisaṅkhā yoniso senāsanaṃ paṭisevāmi,
Reflecting wisely, I use the lodging:
Yāvadeva sītassa paṭighātāya,
only to ward off cold,
Uṇhassa paṭighātāya,
to ward off heat,
Ḍaṃsa-makasa-vātātapa-siriṃsapa-samphassānaṃ paṭighātāya,
to ward off the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun and creeping things,
Yāvadeva utuparissaya-vinodanaṃ paṭisallānārāmatthaṃ.
and only to remove the danger of the seasons and for the enjoyment of seclusion.
The Medicine
Paṭisaṅkhā yoniso gilānapaccaya-bhesajja-parikkhāraṃ paṭisevāmi,
Reflecting wisely, I use medicinal requisites for the sick:
Yāvadeva uppannānaṃ veyyābādhikānaṃ vedanānaṃ paṭighātāya,
only to ward off painful feelings that have arisen,
Abyāpajjha-paramatāyāti.
and for the greatest freedom from affliction.
