The table of headings of the first book of the Abhidhamma — the triads under which every state is classified, recited in full.
- When chanted
- Chanted at funerals and memorial services, where it is known simply as the Mātikā.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
มาติกา means a matrix or table: the list of headings under which a treatise is organised. This is the mātikā of the first book of the Abhidhamma, whose opening lines were chanted a few pages earlier in the Suat Jaeng set.
Here it stands on its own, with its own number and its own printed reference, and is recited in full rather than as an extract. It is among the most familiar of all funeral chants in Thailand.
Meaning and purpose
Every line is a triad, and the first is the one the whole Abhidhamma rests on: wholesome, unwholesome, indeterminate. Then states associated with pleasant feeling, with painful, with neither. States that are results, that are of a nature to give results, that are neither. And so on through the whole list, ending on states visible and impinging, invisible and impinging, and invisible and non-impinging.
The pattern almost never varies: two opposed terms, and then a third that is neither. That third is where the work is done. It is what forces the scheme to cover the whole of experience rather than only the clear cases at either end, and it is why the list can claim to be exhaustive.
That claim is what makes it a funeral chant. What is recited is a scheme complete enough that nothing whatever falls outside it. Said over a death, it amounts to a statement that the person who has died was, all the way through and at every moment, describable in these terms — and in no others.
