A dedication of all merit done by body, speech and mind to every being, percipient or not, with the wish that all obtain excellent food.

When chanted
Recited as a dedication of merit, sharing the fruit of one's good actions with all beings whether they know of it or not.
Historical background

Pattidāna verses give away what has just been gained. Where an anumodanā rejoices in another's gift, this chant assigns the reciter's own accumulated merit outward, and does so without reserving any portion. The title attributes the verses to a king victorious in the three worlds, though no canonical source is printed alongside them here.

The Thai translation here is expansive rather than literal, a common feature of older Thai chanting books. A three-word Pali line such as ติทะเส สุคะตัง กะตัง receives a full sentence naming the Tāvatiṃsa heaven and the potency of its rewards. The page sets two pādas to a printed line and prints the Thai as a block beneath, so the two layers run in step stanza by stanza rather than pāda by pāda.

Meaning and purpose

The opening movement gathers everything eligible for dedication: whatever wholesome action is to be done, done by body, speech and mind, and done such that it leads to the realm of the thirty. Nothing is set aside as too small or too private. The Thai adds that the reciter has already accumulated and fulfilled these, so what follows is the disposal of something actually possessed.

The recipients are then defined as widely as the cosmology permits. Beings without perception and beings with perception — the Thai glosses the first as those existing as mere form alone — together exhaust the categories. May they all be sharers in the fruit of the merit I have made. The formula deliberately leaves no class of being outside the gift.

A practical difficulty follows, and the verses meet it directly. Merit dedicated to those who do not know of it might seem to fall idle, so the chant asks the devas to announce it to them. This is why pattidāna verses are so often chanted aloud: the giving is completed by its being made known, and where human speech cannot reach, the devas are asked to carry it.

The closing movement narrows to a single, concrete wish. All beings in the world subsist by nutriment; may they all obtain food that is agreeable. Having dedicated merit in the largest possible terms, the chant ends by asking for the plainest possible good, and the Thai adds that this is done according to the reciter's own intention, in support of their welfare and happiness.
