อุททิสสะนาธิฏฐานะคาถา Uddissanādhiṭṭhānagāthā The Verses of Dedication and Resolve Chanted at the close of a period of practice or a ceremony, where merit is dedicated and a resolve made. page 62 16 verses

Verses dedicating merit to a very long list of beings, then resolving on the cutting off of craving and asking that Māra find no opening.

When chanted
Chanted at the close of a period of practice or a ceremony, where merit is dedicated and a resolve made.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The title names two acts rather than one. อุททิสสะนะ is dedication, the giving away of merit; อธิฏฐานะ is resolve, a determination made for oneself. The verses do the first and then the second, and the join between them is easy to hear.

The book sets the chant in two stanza groups separated by a blank line, seven lines then nine, which corresponds to that division of subject.

Meaning and purpose

The dedication list is remarkable for how wide it casts, and for the order it casts in. Preceptors, teachers who have helped, mother and father and kinsfolk. Then the sun, the moon, the king, and people of virtue. Then brahmās, māras and indras, the guardians of the world and the devas. Then Yama, friends, human beings, the indifferent — and the hostile.

Māra and the hostile are included by name, with nothing said to justify it and no exception carved out, and then the line that gathers them: may all beings be happy. A list that has just named one's enemies and the personification of temptation arrives at that sentence without flinching.

The resolve then turns inward and the scale changes. May I swiftly come to the cutting off of craving and clinging; may whatever base states are in my mind-stream perish always, wherever I am born, in birth after birth. And the last request is the practical one, made twice: that the māras find no opening to act against these efforts. Not that they be beaten — only that they find no way in. Ending on room to keep working, rather than on a victory, is characteristic of this whole book.
