The Method of Going Forth and Ordination, the Esāhaṃ Form Followed as the order of service at an ordination conducted in this form. pages 284–289 97 verses

The whole ordination ceremony written out as a single continuous procedure, in the form that opens with the words esāhaṃ.

When chanted
Followed as the order of service at an ordination conducted in this form.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

This is not a chant but a method: ninety-seven units taking a candidate from walking into the assembly to being a fully ordained monk, with the Pali to be said and the Thai instructions between.

The book prints two such methods, named for their opening words. This is the เอสาหัง form; the อุกาสะ form is printed before it. They reach the same result by slightly different words.

Meaning and purpose

It begins before anything is said, with what to bring and where to stand: a son of good family with faith, intending to go forth and be ordained, should take the set of three robes and enter the assembly. The ceremony starts with an armful of cloth.

The request that gives the form its name comes at once — เอสาหัง ภันเต, venerable sir, I — and it is a statement of refuge before it is a request for anything. Only after refuge has been declared does he ask for the going forth.

From there the method runs the whole sequence: the ochre cloths, the precepts, dependence, the bowl and robes, the calling in, the questioning, the formal act. Everything printed separately on the pages around it appears here in order, which is what makes this the entry a preceptor would actually work from.

Then, the preceptor having informed the Saṅgha, the teacher chants his own appointment and asks the obstructing conditions. The candidate should answer natthi bhante five times and āma bhante eight times, and give his own name and the preceptor's name twice, as already described above. After that he should sit and listen to the chanting of the kammavācā of ordination to its end. When it is finished the teacher takes the bowl off him, and he should bow three times. Then he should sit with legs folded to one side, palms together, and listen to the preceptor giving the admonition to its end, and answer āma bhante, then bow three times to the preceptor. That completes the ordination ceremony. Then the offerings are presented; when the monks give the blessing, he should pour the water of dedication, directing the merit of this to those to whom he owes gratitude. When the monks reach yathā, he should pour out all the water. After that he listens with palms together to the blessing until it ends. That completes the ceremony.
