The same ceremony in the form that opens with ukāsa, beginning with homage and a request for forgiveness.
- When chanted
- Followed as the order of service at an ordination conducted in this form.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The longer of the two methods at a hundred and ten units, and the one printed first. อุกาสะ means with your leave, and the form is named for the word the candidate opens with.
The two forms differ mainly at the start. Where the เอสาหัง form opens on refuge, this one opens on apology.
Meaning and purpose
The first words a candidate says in this form are not about the Buddha at all: with your leave, I pay homage, venerable sir; forgive me all my faults. Before asking for anything he asks to be excused, and then shares whatever merit he has made.
Only then the request, and it is put simply and three times over: venerable sir, I ask for the going forth. The book marks the posture as well — kneel down with palms together and say.
Whether a ceremony should begin by declaring refuge or by asking pardon is not a question the book raises, and it prints both without preferring either. That two complete methods sit side by side, each usable on its own, is the most practical thing about this part of the book.

As for the three passages from upajjhāyo … therassa bhāro: some preceptors have them said straight through in that form, and some have them said in sections, thus — when the novice says upajjhāyo me bhante hohi three times, the preceptor answers paṭirūpaṃ, opāyikaṃ, pāsādikena sampādehi, and to whichever he says the novice answers ukāsa sampaṭicchāmi each time; then the novice takes it upon himself to say ajjataggedāni … bhāro three times. Then the preceptor or the kammavācā teacher hangs the bowl with its strap on the candidate and declares the bowl and robes; the candidate should answer āma bhante four times, thus:
Paṭhamaṃ upajjhaṃ gāhāpetabbo upajjhaṃ gāhāpetvā pattacīvaraṃ ācikkhitabbaṃ
First he should be made to take a preceptor; having been made to take a preceptor, the bowl and robes should be declared.

Then, the preceptor having informed the Saṅgha, the teacher chants his own appointment and asks the obstructing conditions. The candidate answers natthi bhante five times and āma bhante eight times, and gives his own name and the preceptor's name twice, as already described above. After that he sits and listens to the chanting of the kammavācā of ordination to its end. When it is finished the teacher takes the bowl off him, and he bows three times. Then he sits with legs folded to one side, palms together, and listens to the preceptor giving the admonition to its end, and answers āma bhante. That completes the ordination ceremony; then he bows three times to the preceptor. If there are offerings, they are received and presented to the monks in order. Then the monks give the blessing; while they do, he pours the water of dedication, directing the merit of this to those to whom he owes gratitude. When the monks reach yathā, he pours out all the water. After that he listens with palms together to the blessing until it ends. That completes the ceremony.
